I was trying to decide what to do for my first outdoor adventure on my blog. At this time, I was at my friend’s house, and we were just sitting there. We realized we had not done a polar bear swim to the start of 2023 yet. We knew that this meant we had to go.
I was trying to think of what beach we should go to for our swim and then I remembered Balmacarra Beach. This beach is so unique because if you walk left from the main staircase, you will find yourself a man-made ocean pool which changes with the tide. The decision was made, and we ventured off to our location. Our walk to the location was fast and filled with loads of dancing and singing. When we arrived at our location, we had to climb over some rocks to reach our final destination. When we arrived, we dropped our stuff and the pool and ventured up a hill just past the pool.
This hill had a small path, it is just one made from animals walking on it, but it was amazing. On both sides of the path, there was a steep slope that went down to the water. At some points it was so narrow the only thing on the top of the hill was the path. On our ventures on this path, we spotted many cool trees growing off the sides, and nice plants. After walking for some time, we made our way back to the ocean pool.
When we got to the ocean pool, we decided to jump off the cement wall into the ocean pool because it was quite deep there, and we could dive in. By jumping into the ocean pool rather than the ocean, we did not have to deal with the waves in the ocean. This was really nice to jump into calm water. When we were ready to go in the water, this sweet lady offered to film us. Once the camera was ready, we mentally prepared ourselves for the cold and dove in on the count of 3. The water was much warmer than I thought, and I was able to stay in it without being too cold. A couple of my friends rushed out, but another friend and I found it quite relaxing just to stay in.
This adventure was amazing and very sporadic! I recommend doing a polar bear swim if you have not done it this year. It is a great start to the year, and I think my friends and I will be doing it once a month.
Something that was also super cool is that there was a person snorkelling with a wetsuit and spearfishing which was so interesting!
