A couple of weeks ago, I had the idea to bike to school because the weather was a bit warmer. I thought this was going to be a great idea, it was not raining, and the sun was shining. My plan for this bike ride was to bike to UVic from my house for the class which is about 20km of mostly hills then go to the library to rent a GoPro so that I could film my ride on the way back.
I started my venture at 7:30 am because the last time I biked to school; it took approximately 50 minutes. I set off and it was cold, but I dressed appropriately and thankfully wore gloves, so I was prepared. Everything was great on the bike ride except my backpack was so heavy and full! I didn’t really think about this at the time, but it was hard to bike off my seat because my backpack was so heavy. It was also hard to shoulder check because my backpack blocked so much. If I did this again, I would make sure it was on a day when I brought less to school.
The bike ride was fun! It was hard at points, but I made it. Although going up hills is hard, going down hills makes up for it all. Once I got to UVic I got off my bike and noticed it was so dirty and I had mud all over me. Although it had not rained while I was riding, it had rained during the night so there was still a wet road. I parked my bike got changed and then went to my day of school. I have to say, I really enjoyed biking around campus.
During my break, I went to the library tech help desk to rent out a Go-Pro. This was a really easy process, I asked for a Go-Pro for my class, signed a waiver and they gave me the Go-Pro. The Go-Pro came with all the accessories too. There was a handlebar mount, a helmet mount, a chest mount, a flotation device and any more accessories.
Here is me testing out the Go-Pro
After school, I got dressed back into my bike clothes, set up the handlebar mount and set sail. This ride was okay, but it did rain and pour at one point. It was not that bad though because It was sunny. When I got home, I was so muddy!
I would probably bike to school again but only in the spring or summer and I have to say, I like biking a lot more when I don’t have a stuffed full backpack!
Although using the GoPro was fun, The footage was not that cool on a road bike. It was kind of just like a dash cam. The footage would be much more exciting if I was mountain biking or if it was mounted on my helmet, and I was with some other people. It was a cool experience but I probably would not use it again on a road bike ride.
Here’s a short video (50 mins of biking squeezed into one minute) of my bike ride.
